The former Central Asian Soviet republics are gaining strategic importance not least because of the "New Silk Road" initiated by China. In addition, these states are of growing interest due to their rich deposits of mineral resources, especially oil and natural gas, as energy suppliers. Europe must not lose sight of this region.
